More About Bite Size Languages

Are you struggling to understand spoken language, but feel overwhelmed and lost when it comes to finding suitable materials to fix the problem?

Either the resources are way too difficult (intermediate through advanced) leaving you uninterested...

...or the people speak so slowly and use vocabulary that is completely irrelevant for you. (Do you really need to know 30 different species of fish or plants?)

Have you also noticed that, many courses contain a ton of English, which you can probably already speak!

This is where Bite Size Languages come in...

It's a series of courses providing a complete system for listening practice, that beginners (or false beginners) can effortlessly understand and follow along to.

With 100 lessons of short and easy dialogues, per language, anyone -- even the busiest of people will have time to go through at least one lesson on a daily basis.

Plus, with comprehensive lesson notes and extras anyone can dive in and enhance their studying with transcripts, translations, vocabulary, and grammar sections.

We've done all the work for you, so you can just sit back and listen to the lessons, and notice how quick your listening comprehension and language skills improve.

Who's Behind?

Hey!

My name is Kris Broholm....

I've been running the Actual Fluency Podcast and Blog since 2014, where I've interviewed over 150 language learning experts.

Frustrated with the lack of good, easy-to-consume listening resources for beginners I set out to create Bite Size Languages to fill the gap.

More Testimonials

FEATURES

  • 100 lessons of beginner-friendly dialogues (comprehensible input) per language.

  • Easy to listen to in just a few minutes per day - avoiding overwhelm and burnout

  • Relevant and useful every-day vocabulary - no 50 species of fish or other useless phrases

  • Additional materials for every lesson transcripts, cultural tips, and word by word translations.

BENEFITS

  • Improve your listening comprehension. Learning to understand natural, spoken language is one of the biggest challenges for new learners? If you struggle to understand, or when words start and end then you need more listening practice.

  • Improve your pronunciation skills. If you don't train your ear to the sounds of the language, how will you be able to pronounce them correctly?

  • You learn the grammar in CONTEXT.  No need to memorise boring tables or rule sheets. Once you've listened to the dialogues you can dive into the grammar explanations and guide provided.

“Comprehensible input is the crucial and necessary ingredient for the acquisition of language.”

-Prof. Stephen Krashen, linguist and creator of The Input Hypothesis

According to Krashen, success in language learning comes down to  "comprehensible input"

That means foreign language materials that are slightly harder than your current level.

The Bite Size Courses provide exactly this for beginners and false beginners.

  • Supplementary lesson materials: Transcripts, translations, grammar notes, and cultural lessons and a full grammar course included!)

  • Additional app included: Soundwise for hands-free, on-the-go binge listening.

  • Lifetime Access and Updates. No subscriptions or renewals.

  • 14-day Satisfaction Guarantee. No risk-purchase.

How each lesson is structured

Here's what each lesson contains.

Lesson Audio

Clear, target language audio featuring 2 native speakers (male and female). Conversational in nature, it features common daily situations.

NOTE: You can find samples for the remaining 4 languages further down this page

Transcript

Use the line-by-line transcript as a guide when you listen, this will really help you make out the natural pauses and pronunciation in the language compared to how it's written. This will also help with learning the vocabulary.

Sample Transcript:

Arriver en retard.

Salut. Comment ça va ?

Tu es en retard.

S'il te plaît ne te mets pas en colère contre moi.

Est-ce que tu t'es perdu ?

Oui. Je me suis perdu.

Ça va maintenant ?

Oui, tout va bien.

Super.

Grammar Notes

In this section you'll learn some of the most important grammar points for the lesson. This is not mandatory studying, as you'll get a lot of the grammar through context just by listening.

Sample Grammar Notes:

"Il" is a neutral value and is more of an "it" than a "he." "S'il vous plaît" would be the formal form.

"Se perdre" is another exemple of the reflexive form of the verb with "se" (oneself): "je me perds," "tu te perds," "il se perd," etc.

French adjectives have different endings when describing people, depending on the gender. In this case, "perdu" is for a male, whereas for a female it would be "perdue."

Translation

There's a useful translation for you to check your comprehension. We've put this at the end of the lesson because you'll learn better if you try to understand as much as you can first.

Sample Translation:

Showing up late

Hi. How are you?

You're late.

Please don't be mad at me.

Did you get lost?

Yes. I got lost.

Are you OK now?

Yes, everything is all right.

Great.

Literal Translation

You'll also find a direct translation, which reveals how the grammar works in practice.

Sample Literal Translation:

To-arrive in lateness.

Hi. How it goes?

You are in lateness.

If he to-you pleases not you put not in anger against me.

Is it that you yourself is lost?

Yes. I myself am lost.

It goes now?

Yes, everything goes well.

Great.

Cultural Notes

Communication isn't just about grammar and vocabulary. Each lesson explains common practices, etiquette, culture, and much more. A great way to impress native speakers with some additional knowledge tourists won't know!

Cultural Notes Example:

In some cultures, being late is wholly unacceptable, but in France, there's a more open-minded view on late arrivals.

This is especially true in the south of France, where being 15 to 20 minutes late isn't frowned upon.

When you do arrive, you'll be expected to be bringing a small gift, like a bouquet of flowers, a live plant, or chocolates.

More Sample Lessons

Each lesson is conversational, and recorded by two native speakers.
